Lumi jacket — glowing detail

Overview

Lumi is a high-visibility running jacket designed to improve nighttime safety for runners and cyclists without compromising comfort or aesthetics. Unlike traditional visibility gear — which either relies on external light sources to reflect or bulky battery-powered LEDs — Lumi uses bioluminescence-inspired design to offer passive, self-glowing visibility.

The jacket features glow-in-the-dark screen-printed ink and integrated 3D-printed textile elements that illuminate key areas of the body, especially in motion zones like the arms and spine. The fabrication process combined UV-reactive inks, screenprinting on breathable technical fabric, and flexible 3D-printed mesh to create a lightweight, functional, and visually striking garment. Lumi rethinks urban visibility gear, proving that safety and self-expression can coexist in motion-focused apparel.

Challenge

How can we create a low-power, visually striking visibility system for night runners — one that feels integrated, wearable, and inspired by nature rather than dependent on external tech?

Solution

The final jacket combines athletic fit with nature-inspired visual language. Glowing 3D-printed details and screen-printed accents activate after charging under light, creating a soft glow that enhances visibility during night runs. The aesthetic feels organic and integrated, offering safety through design rather than external gear.
